Corso Digital patternmaking with Seamly2D

English version below

“Fashion is entering a phase of disruption and transformation. New fashion technology might correct the excesses and flaws of the current fashion industry, but not necessarily. We need to be open in our discussion to be sure that new technologies provide maximum impact to the industry and ensure global access of benefits to all stakeholders”, queste le sue parole.

Course "Digital patternmaking with Seamly2D"

Digital patternmaking with Seamly2D is the new course scheduled in July organized in collaboration with Susan Spencer, founder of the project that supports and develops the open source software Seamly2D for the creation of digital patterns.

We are of course honored to announce this partnership with Susan that has our Fashion designer Sara Savian as the teacher of the online course in English. We must also immediately underline that, for us, this is a further step in the direction of spreading digital skills.

We are very happy to take up this international challenge supported by the experience we have gained in European projects carried out in recent years, and then by the step forward that we have made in the field of online teaching proposed during these months of emergency related to Covid-19.

The philosophy that accompanies the Seamly2D project is also in accordance with many of our reflections: Susan Spencer, in a recent article in Medium, reflects on the future of fashion companies. Even in this sector we find ourselves, in fact, at a crossing point and the choice of exploiting the potential of technology, whether looking at small brands or emerging fashion designers or large fashion groups, is increasingly becoming a must. “Fashion is entering a phase of disruption and transformation. New fashion technology might correct the excesses and flaws of the current fashion industry, but not necessarily. We need to be open in our discussion to be sure that new technologies provide maximum impact to the industry and ensure global access of benefits to all stakeholders”, these are her words.

Let’s take a step back to explain how we arrived at the “Digital patternmaking with Seamly2D” course: Costantino Bongiorno and Zoe Romano met Susan Spencer in 2016 during a trip to Shenzhen (China), but, on a virtual level, we were already in contact! Our interest in technology and research in the field of digital fashion had already made us passionate about the development of open source software such as Seamly2D and Valentina CAD. In these years Sara Savian has been passionate about the subject and, after studying, participating in translations in the forum that accompanies the development of the project, she started offering courses first at WeMake and then with Fastweb Digital Academy

One last aspect that we want to underline is that part of the cost of the course is donated to Fabricatorz Foundation, which supports initiatives in the fields of art, technology and culture by investing in open knowledge, free culture and people. The collected fee is used to support the development of the open source software Seamly2D, unique in its kind, because it allows to create digital patterns with any operating system adapting to any modelling method.
