Fab City Residency | Centrinno

Versione italiana in fondo.

Fab City Residency ! il designer Vicente VarellaThe designer Vicente Varella is the protagonist of the first Fab City Residency of the Centrinno European project. The residency takes place in Base Milano within the framework of the Design Week 2021. It is possible to get to know Vicente Varella during the whole week of the Salone del Mobile in Milano. He is located in Base Milano in the area dedicated to We Will Design, an educational and performing path of 5 residencies launched by BASE Milano to imagine the future through the talent of young designers.

How did you come to the Fab City Residency?
Mattia Ciurnelli of SuperForma introduced me to the Centrinno project and specifically to the Fab City Residency. I’m a product designer focused on plastic waste: on one hand there are many organizations working on recycling plastic and on the other hand I look at this as an opportunity to create high quality objects that speaks the true value of this material.

Do you work with recycled plastics?
Yes, I do. Recycling plastic is a resource intensive process, we need to get to know how to collect it, clean it, etc; there are a lot of steps we have to consider when we say “I work with recycled plastic”. All these steps refer to a specific expertise and it is not necessarily connected with the creation of new objects. We can say that there is a huge effort to have the material recycled and that often pushes away the question of what to make with it.

Your work as a designer comes as a second step in the recycling process. What’s your approach?
I have a designer approach in creating an object: I look for something useful and also nice, and, specifically, it has to answer a need. Sometimes I see objects done with recycled plastic  whose only aim is to show that you can reuse materials often without paying much attention to the design of the product itself. I think it’s a missoportunity when you put in perspective how much resources goes into recycling the material in the first place.

Which is the material you are working with?
During this residency I work with plastic sheets that SuperForma created with 3D printing waste. I’m going to make some lamps. I’m studying the material I have, for example I discovered it is too heavy when I first tried to hang the prototype!

When did you start working with recycled materials?
I started working with recycled plastic in 2018 when I joined Precious Plastic in Eindhoven: it is a project that develops open source machines and techniques to make recycling more accessible. In Eindhoven the approach was more manual in comparison with this residency where I can work with two fablabs. But I think that it was good for me to start with an artisan approach. Thanks to the fablab I can make the process faster by sending the more technical or precise  files to a machine. This is actually the first time I’m working with a fablab!

Fab City Residency | prototipo di lampadaWhat do you want to show here at the Design Week to the people coming to see your work?
The aim of this week is to trigger other people by showing how we can make things locally starting from the material we use in Milano. I’m working with SuperForma sheets that are produced here, very close to my lab, out of 3D printed waste pieces collected in the surroundings. This aligns very well with  the Centrinno project approach to build a Fab City Hub.

What are you doing just now, today?
I’m really fascinated by the colors of these plastic sheets, This is something you don’t often find. To make an example: when you work with recycled plastic from shampoo bottles you don’t have bright colors or traces of the filaments of the 3D printing process. Everywhere I go the material is a bit different and it tells a bit of the story of what it was before.

These days I’m focused on making lamps combining cnc and 3D printers to create different lamp models. I’m testing different methods and making a kind of physical database about how the different materials respond to the way I handle them.

———————————————————————————————————————————

È possibile conoscere Vicente Varella di persona andando a Base nell’area dedicata a We Will Design.

Cosa stai facendo adesso?

Vieni a conoscere Vicente Varella a Base Milano.
